Abe’s lessons for today were on Songs and Singing. Abe asks the question, ‘do we sing in church because we like to sing, or songs?’
Well, we may indeed like the songs we sing, but there is more to singing when we are gathered in worship to God than making us feel good. We teach in song, we learn in song, we honor God in song, and we exhort one another in song too. Liking songs or singing is not what we should focus on. This is a reason why so many churches today have added guitars, drums, cymbals, amps, and other devices to make music sound good – to ENTERTAIN. Entertainment may satisfy us, but the focus is often missed.
Abe also talks about some of the “songs” in the Old Testament. There are many. How many do you remember? We hope you’ll take time to listen to both lessons and reconsider what it is we do in our singing and in the songs we sing.
Recordings of both lessons are below, as are slides from the PowerPoint presentation of the lessons. To use just his play, and then move through the slideshow to help you best understand the lessons.
