Understanding God

Both of Abe’s lessons from Sunday begin with the passage below…

Psalm 14:1-3 (NKJV) – “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, no, not one.”

The reality of the scripture above is indeed the reason the world is in the condition we see it today. Even for those of us who TRY very hard to be godly and truly be the child that God wants us to be, we still fail. Satan is very strong, and while we have to work to understand God, it takes doing absolutely NOTHING to get what Satan wants from us: to sin.

Just as I’ve done exercises with the youth of our congregation, in trying to hit a target, missing the target is VERY easy and it takes WORK to hit get close, even more WORK to hit it perfectly! That takes practice and practice as has been said by many MAKES PERFECT.

So how can we understand God? PRACTICE. Practice reading. Practice studying. Practice teaching. Practice preaching. Practice avoiding sin. Practice prayer. As in the passage above, being “corrupt” and “abominable” even being a “fool” are all EASY to do. If we want to be found by God as those doing His will, we need to seek to understand God and that is only possible with effort and diligence.
