Spiritual Growth & Maturity

Another installment of his series from Robert Harkrider’s material on Spiritual Growth & Maturity, Cody continues his series starting in Hebrews 5:11-14 today.

He begins by focusing on the birth of a new Christian like that of a new baby. He continues by looking at the differences in growth in the physical world versus the spiritual world.

The importance of the Word of God is everything for a new Christian and for those teaching them. Just like a baby can’t eat solid food at first, some things are indigestible to a new Christian until they are older and stronger.

Just like a child must exercise to become stronger and more able to do things on their own, a Christian too needs constant work and effort in the right places.

As he points out from Hebrews 6:1, there is no reason to keep laying down a foundation that has been laid. We need to build on the foundation not keep scratching at the surface over and over.

Faith, baptism, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, eternal judgment, are all part of the “first principles”. What do we do next?

One thing we don’t want to do is to slide back into the world or backslide as some call it. We overcome too much to fall back into the pit out of which we came in order to be saved.

Cody’s conclusion is that continual spiritual growth is required for maturity and it is extremely important for salvation.
