A man was knocking on doors in a community asking for donations to build a denominational church building. He knocked at the door of a member of the church of Christ. The Christian said, “I’ll give you $100 if you will call it the church of Christ.” The man said, “We can’t do that.” The Christian said, “All right, I’ll give you $100 if you will put this on your sign: This is not the church of Christ.” The man left in a huff, saying, “We can’t do that either!”
Christ said, “I will build My church” (Matt. 16:18). It belongs to Him, so why not call it the “church of Christ”? Paul said, “The churches of Christ salute you” (Rom 16:16). It seems that the founders of denominations go out of their way to call their churches everything but the CHURCH OF CHRIST. There is something in a name!
