Waynesville member, Roger Starnes, Jr. shared a lesson that was an exceptional study for him, in “Jeremiah’s Scrolls” from Jeremiah chapter 36.
Roger begins by noting that as Christians trying to live a godly life before our brethren or the people in our lives, even if we are doing what we feel is right, we can face rejection and harassment from those we are sometimes trying to support! This was nothing new to the prophet Jeremiah.
This expository lesson begins by looking at who Jeremiah was a prophet of God for, from Josiah to Jehoiakim and we see this was the time of Nebuchadnezzar.
In this passage, Jeremiah is told to do something that no other prophet had been asked to do (at least to Roger’s knowledge). We look at the very simple request that God had for His children, Israel and Judah but how they couldn’t keep it.
We are introduced to a man very close to Jeremiah and one who supported him far more than we may have ever paid attention named Baruch. We see him being asked by Jeremiah to do something that was obviously difficult. But all for God trying to pull His children from the edge they were walking towards.
We see a King and his leaders living in a kingdom that is built on God and for God, but has turned towards the king and his leaders vanity. Even still, you see some trying to fix things or make something that scares them known to the king. The king reacts poorly to the words of the thing that Baruch makes for Jeremiah and destroys it.
So what to do now? Do it again! Make another object for the same purpose. The king still acts harshly towards Jeremiah and Baruch, but God protects them.
Roger wraps the lesson up by noting that just because the Word of God is taken away by destroying a Bible, a scroll, or a document, God’s word does not become diminished. It is still just as valid as a speed limit sign and roadway even if the sign is stolen, torn down, or missing. So our obedience is imperative.
