Equally Yoked

Roger Jr. shared his lesson today, though our services were officially cancelled due to show and ice. The lesson was a celebration of the life and marriage of two of the Waynesville congregation’s most long-term members, Glendon and Edith Lamb.

Roger met with both Edith and Glendon as well as their youngest son, Mike prior to this lesson to capture some of what they have done and dealt with in their many years of marriage and as members of the church in Waynesville, OH.

While the lesson focus on their lives as a couple and as a mother, father, and grandparents, the gist of the lesson is how both of them dedicated themselves to one another and to the Lord as members of the church. As you can see on the intro slide for Roger’s lesson, he says “The dedication of a husband and wife to each other and to the Lord’s church”.

As the lesson’s title notes, Roger is taking the metaphor from 2 Corinthians 6:1 and using it as a picture of having the right spouse, supporting the church in the right way, while raising children the best they can. Often we hear this passage used to compare with people who marry someone who is not a team player in the marriage, or who may not want to know God while the other does. In this case, Roger shares why he feels these two people are “Equally Yoked”.

The lesson begins by looking at Glendon and Edith, when they were born, where they were born, how they got to Waynesville, how they met, and then later what their family spiritual journey was that got them to where they are now.

The lesson looks at the jobs and roles each of them played over many years. It touches on where they met, how that happened, who was involved, when they were married, the house they first lived in, where they moved and how the family grew.

We see how Edith came from a New Testament church background but how Glendon came from a Pentecostal background. We learn where they were baptized and even see a baptismal certificate for Glendon from March 9, 1958! Just 3 years after the church building at Third and Miami Streets in Waynesville was built!

We see that building, how small it is compared to our new building, see when the mortgage was paid off and learn a bit about the families of the church and how close they all lived to one another! We see some of the work of the church in those early days, we see a partial list of the many preachers who have worked with the church in Waynesville (many not listed), and we see the young Lamb family growing up.

The lesson wraps up with some scriptural considerations for listeners to think about. While we may be talking about Glendon and Edith Lamb today, the path they have walked on for the Lord and for the church is one we should all consider aspiring to. While our focus should always be Christ, there are men and women who have done much for the church that we might take note of and try to emulate or even surpass in our roles as Christians.
