Elkanah

Former Waynesville member, Cody Cain spoke for the congregation today in delivering a lesson on “Elkanah”. He began the lesson by looking at the great responsibilities that fathers have. He also notes that so many of us have failed to teach or lead our kids or families as we should.

He then considers some of the great fathers of the Bible, in looking at Abraham, Zebedee, and Joseph the earthly “father” of Jesus. But his focus is Elkanah. Do you remember who Elkanah was? Cody reminds us that his story begins in 1 Samuel 1.

While he is almost presented as a background character to his wife, Hannah, when looking closer at him, we see a many given to worshipping God and caring for his family. He didn’t worship God alone, but with all of them.

Following the introduction of Elkanah and his wives and children, he turns to look at what it means to care for wives and children and how Elkanah did that while agreeing to his wife’s desire to give her only child to God.

But her child did not get left an orphan with the priest, each year they returned to visit him and bring him clothing. This only child (at the time) would become one of Israel’s greatest men of God.
