Abe presented another installment to his “Conduct in the House of God” series on “Elders”. From the earlier glimpses we have into the old testament, elders have been the foundation of wisdom, instruction, and decision-making. We see this same respect for elders of society in all parts of the world throughout recorded history. There is good reason. Age leads to experience, and as humans age, their selfish ambitions are often cast aside for the well-being of those who are younger.
It is no wonder that God made elders the leaders of the old testament in so many stories. These same aged men become the pillars of the new testament church – that is when they rely on God for their wisdom.
The lessons below cover what elders are, how we get them, why we need them, and how to become one. The early church was started by appointing elders in every city. That need has not gone away. Elders instruct, they teach, they watch, the care for, they help, they love, they serve. This position is one of the greatest and often most difficult for the church. But it is a role we desperately need more of today.
Abe’s series is named from this passage in 1 Timothy 3:14-15: “These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
