There are many sins that we can be guilty of. Some sins are NOT doing what we are supposed to be doing. Some sins are DOING things we are told to avoid. The word “sin” means to “miss the mark”. For the high school class last year, I illustrated this point by showing a archery target, and showing that anything that was not a bulls eye was sin.
When God tells us ‘where to go’, and we don’t go there, that is sin. When God tells us to ‘stay where we are’, and we venture off, that too is sin. It is a pretty simple plan. If we stick to doing what God wants us to, we are not sinning. Once we go beyond what he asks of us, or we fail to do what he asks, then we have problems.
The simple truth is that we are all sinners. Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. So that that mean just you and not me? Does it mean those people who don’t go to church? Or does “all” mean “all”? If you know English, “all” does mean “all”. So every man and woman on earth has been guilty of sin, except for Jesus. Additionally, that means even Christians are sinners and are guilty of sin. It is a mistake for those who do not go to church to think that those who do are sinless. Although it should be true that those who believe in God and follow the words of His Son should sin less. While we are not perfect, we are to strive to be sinless. But we know we can’t be so we just do the best we can.
The two lessons by Abe will look at some of the ways we humans sin, and concludes the lessons by what we can do about our sins.
