Waynesville member, Kyle Jones shared his lesson today entitled, “Kind Words”, with a focus on Matthew 12:34-37. He begins his lesson looking at the holidays, and how we hear that they are always supposed to be happy and enjoyable, but we often see people wanting to scream!
Next, Kyle looks at the power of works, how God made the world through words, how our words can tear down or build up, how our words share what is in our hearts, but how kindness in our words can do so much. All with the goal of reflecting Christ!
One of Kyle’s favorite verses is from Proverbs 25:11 talking about what our words can be like unto. Next he looks at some of the fruits from Israel, one of which is apples!
In our focus verses, Jesus has some things to say about the Pharisees. Mostly because they are trying to trap him in doing “wrong” in helping others on the Sabbath – a day of rest and not work. They don’t see the need for mercy.
When the passage talks about the Jewish leadership being a “brood of vipers” Kyle shares some images of snakes… He shares Matthew 12:36 noting how we’ll give an account for every idle word we speak and from Matthew 7 how we can know others by the fruits they produce.
As he wraps up the lesson, he shares 3 important points:
- That we pray for God to guide our speech.
- That we slow down and choose our words carefully.
- Speak in such a way that your listeners benefit from your words.
